What Banks Look at When Assessing an SME Loan
Credit assessment is less mysterious than it appears. Lenders are trying to answer whether the business can service the facility in ordinary conditions — and whether the file is consistent.
Consistency across GST, banking and financials
Turnover that appears in GST but not in the bank, or profits that never become cash, invite questions. Alignment is more persuasive than a single impressive number.
Banking behaviour
Cheque returns, frequent limit excesses, and unexplained cash withdrawals tell a story. So do clean, well-explained flows.
Repayment capacity
Debt is serviced from cash, not from a projection slide. Existing EMIs, partner drawings and tax outflows all compete with a new facility.
Purpose and security
A clear use of funds, and a security structure the lender can take, still sit at the centre of most SME files. Guarantee-linked routes do not erase this logic.
Practices vary by institution. This is an orientation, not a scoring model.
